Antique Gilbert

Please Help. My Antique Gilbert mantle Clock Runs way too fast! When first wound, it can gain 8 or 9 mins. in?
24 hours. I have lowered the pendulum and increased the weight by 5 grams. I recently bought it and it seems in good mechanical order and appears to have an original Gilbert pendulum weight. Does anyone have a suggestion. I have never encountered this and I have had many old clocks before. THANK YOU, JIM
Is it an 8 day clock? they usually are.
After the first day does it settle down and work better?
Does it work for a full week or just 3 or 4 days?
Check the clock is level and the ticks are even. if it goes
tick, tock, pause, tick, tock, pause
then tilt the clock until it goes
tick, pause, tock, pause, tick , pause, tock
and try it again.
If the mainspring is old then when fully wound the force on the wheels would be correct and then over the next few days the force will drop off very quickly. A clock repairer could have done a botch job on it rather than pay for a new one.
most likely causes are
Wrong mainspring!
The pallets havent been adjusted properly or they are worn.
There is play between the leader and the pendulum allowing the pallets to skip
Play on the wheels or worn pivot holes
the gear ratios are highly unlikely to be wrong as changing wheels for different ones is harder than mending it properly in the first place.
I would take it back to the shop you bought it from and get them to look into it for you. Make a list of what it is doing exactly
ie. first day +8 min. 2nd day +2 min. 5th day stopped
that might help them.
