The Hidden Origin of the Grandfather Clock

Ever wondered why these tall clocks set in wooden cases are called grandfather clocks? They were originally called “longcase clocks” or “coffin clocks”. Yeah, sounds eerie, right? Well, the story behind the name might be more eerie than you think. Ever wondered how these time pieces acquired their current name?

Once upon a time there were two scientists and a clockmaker who contributed to the creation of this timeless classic clock. The Italian scientist named Galileo Galilei in the year 1582 discovered that time could be measured and told by a device called the pendulum. The pendulum was not originally one of his shining contributions to the world. In 1656, a Dutch scientist by the name of Christian Huygens assembled the first clock which incorporated the use of the pendulum.

It was William Clement, a Dutch clock maker who first realized that when a pendulum’s length is increased, the time on a clock was more accurate. However, the three-foot long pendulum he built would not fit onto a standard-sized clock case. 1970 came and Clement built the very first “long-case” clock with a pendulum. These clocks were also called “Floor clocks”, because they were placed on the floor standing. They were also called “Coffin Clocks” for looking like the wooden boxes where corpses were buried in. This chapter of the history of the Grandfather Clock is completely true and proven.

The next part of the tale is supposedly real as well. Truth or not, you have to admit there is a healthy dose of eeriness and it makes the story truly interesting! There were two brothers named “Jenkins”. Both of them operated and owned the George Hotel, an establishment located in rural North Yorkshire, England. In the lobby of this old hotel was a long-cased clock. The time piece just “tick-tocked” away and kept perfect record of time, until… one of the Jenkins brother died. Then queerly, the long-cased clock just would not keep the right time anymore. It always ran behind. The remaining brother brought in many clock smiths to fix it, but none of them could fix it. None of them could figure out what was wrong with the clock. It simply just kept running slower than normal.

At the age of ninety years old, the remaining Jenkins brother’s heart suddenly stopped ticking, and so he passed away. On the day of his death, the long-cased clock that was positioned on the lobby of the hotel stopped ticking as well. Was it a bizarre coincidence? The new owner of the hotel just left the clock at its original location with its hands telling the exact time of death of the second Jenkins’s brother.

As time went by, there was a man named Henry Clay Work, who was an American songwriter, visited the George Hotel in the year 1876. Mr. Work learned about the story of the Jenkins brothers and the long-cased clock in the lobby. It story touched him quite deeply that he was inspired enough which made him compose a song titled, “My Grandfather’s Clock.” The song at that time became very popular. From that day forward, long-cased clocks have since then become known by their new name. The name GrandFather’s Clock or grandfather clocks were born.
